5 Tips to Get Started on That Idea Right Now

So just recently I received a note from one of the participants in the that said:
Thank you again for helping me with this challenge because it is filling in so many gaps and minimizing my frustrations.
Now this is really great to hear! But then, she went on to express a bit of frustration in wanting to start a business but having a hard time nailing down that one idea, evident by her statement:
How do I prioritize my ideas and put this in perspective?
Like her, I’ve had multiple ideas that got me excited about being my own boss.
And, you may have multiple passions as well. Wanting to start your own business can be exciting, but it can also be scary and overwhelming, too… And even more so if you have many, many ideas that you can’t decide on which one to pursue.

The great thing about multi-passionate people:

  • It’s great to be well-versed and have great experiences in a number of things because this makes you a well-rounded individual and gives you an opportunity to connect with your well-defined customer avatar (described in the 30 Day Startup Challenge… click here to register).
  • You’ll never get bored in life because you’ll never run out of ideas to keep life interesting.
  • You’re not alone in your frustrations and having many, many ideas!
The not-so-great news:

  • You may feel that you lack focus.
  • You don’t want to feel boxed-in and tied to one idea.
  • You may desire to put all things in the right perspective but feel no guidance in doing that.
  • You need money right now, and want an idea that will help you reach that goal today!

So, if you’re wanting to hone in on that one idea and get started right away, here are some suggestions to help you get focused. Then, you’ll have the time and freedom to pursue the other passions later on.

  1. Be realistic. You may want to choose the idea that has the largest potential customer base who are willing and able to pay for your product or services. Also, think about what would be the least costly venture to pursue for you right now? For instance, coaching and public speaking can have a relatively low startup cost (putting together a website and getting your name out there may be your biggest expense). However, if you’ve never been a coach or need help on putting together your services and packages, you may need to take a course to help you put this all together.
  2. Which idea rings true to you: If you knew you could do the one thing you love for the rest of your life, what would it be? Now pursue that!
  3. Commit to putting in the time: By that, I mean to take an honest look at what time you have (outside of work) and what additional time you are willing to devote to building your business. When looking at ways to manage your time, don’t focus on the idea for the moment. For instance, say right now you have 30 minutes after work that you can devote to building your business, distraction free (no kids, no cooking, no cleaning, no phone calls, no texting, NO FACEBOOK)… Now, commit to adding 1 additional hour a day. And, you may have to schedule this. It may mean waking up 1 hour earlier than usual or taking 20 minutes of your lunch break to do this, plus the random 40 minutes that you’ll spend on texting during the day (that time adds up, trust me). But in the end, know that it’ll be worth it when you’re ready to launch!
  4. Say no: We can all be pulled in different directions and people will often ask us to do things that we really may not have the time to do (or, if we’re being honest with ourselves, we may NOT WANT to do). From now on, when asked to volunteer your time or help others with their projects in your free time, if it doesn’t help you in moving your business forward, decline. Fee free to state something like, “I’m thrilled that you thought of me. Right now, I’m swamped with my own projects and won’t have the time to dedicate towards your ____. But, congratulations on starting this! I can’t wait to hear about your progress.”
  5. Be accountable: Set a date to have your business open and announce it to people you know and don’t know. This will help hold you accountable AND get your butt in gear =).

These are just a few pointers. If you’d like help in finding a way to start your own business, you can take action and do a few things right now:
