Six months into a new position, I sat across from my manager as she looked me straight in the eye.

“I don’t remember us having that conversation about a salary increase.”

My heart sank.

But, I had an email.

đź’°And practically overnight… I secured the salary increase that I had expected and asked for.

Here’s what I’ve learned through multiple salary negotiations — from $88,000 up to the tune of $200,000 (and all with only a BSN):

The biggest mistakes nurses make when negotiating salary:

📍Throwing out a number too soon – Before you even know what the role truly entails or what they’re willing to pay.

📍Not using what I call my Condition + Deflection Method – When they ask “What salary are you looking for,” this Method becomes a very important tool.

📍Accepting the first “no” – When they say “This is the salary, we can’t offer more,” that’s not the end. It’s the beginning of a strategic conversation about when you can revisit it.

📍Forgetting to document everything – No email trail = no leverage. Always confirm verbal agreements in writing.

📍Not positioning yourself as the final candidate first – Your negotiating power skyrockets when they’ve already decided you’re the one they want.

Most nurses leave thousands of dollars on the table because we’re uncomfortable asking for more.

  • We worry they’ll think we’re ungrateful.
  • We convince ourselves we don’t work that hard.
  • We fear they’ll fire us… or simply not hire us at all.

But here’s what I know after negotiating my salary EVERY. SINGLE. TIME:

🎯You don’t get what you deserve. You get what you negotiate.🎯

So, I just updated my free “Show Me The Money” guide with 7 TIPS and SCRIPTS you can use beginning today, whether you’re job hunting or asking for a raise in your current role.
