How My Business Took Me to Greece & Turkey

I was a nurse, and I wanted to start my own business. I just had no idea how to do it at the time I made the decision to move forward.

All I knew was that I loved international travel, and I wanted to create a business that allowed me to do more of that.

When figuring out a way to get going, I focused on some things that I found in my research that would help me start and grow a business successfully.

So I came up with my own system, called the 6 Rights of Nursing Entrepreneurship, that helped me take a closer look at what’s important in getting my business off the ground:

• The right mindset
• The right business idea
• The right clients/customers
• The right product/services
• The right implementation/systems
• The right support

Giving these Rights my close attention, I founded RN Getaways, a boutique travel company that allows nurses to travel internationally for fun in a group setting.

And so far, we’ve seen some pretty amazing places.

In our first year, 2014, my clients and I went to Istanbul, Turkey. It’s one of my favorite cities of all the places I’ve traveled, so I wanted to share the experience with others.

And then in our second season, we had two summer tours of Greece, exploring the cities of Athens, Delphi, and the wonderful island of Santorini.

And next year, we’re off to Rome!

So I finally found a way to turn my passion into something I could do everyday… and make money from it!

But of course, it took a lot of work behind the scenes.

When I first put up my website right before Christmas in 2013 (branded under a different name at that time), I have to admit…

I wasn’t ready. I wasn’t even close to being ready…

Even after tons of research and late nights online learning about starting a business, creating my website and focusing on ways to find clients, among other things, I knew my business would never be perfect.

My website would never be perfect. My travel packages would never be perfect. And, my message would never be perfect.

But, it was very important for me to start right away.

Otherwise, if I didn’t start right away, I still may be wondering if orange was the right branding color! (And that’s still a debate…)

Being new in business, we tend to focus on the little things that may paralyze us and prevent us from enjoying any bit of success— like obsessing over our website design, business cards, branding colors, etc.

Focusing on these things will keep us stuck. And the reality of being stuck… you stay right where you are… for weeks, months, and even years.

And that was my case for a long time.

So one day, I decided to get unstuck, despite my not being ready.

And that’s how RN Getaways was born.

It was born out of uncertainty. But most importantly, it was born out of necessity. Following a bit of burnout working at the bedside as a nurse, I was ready to start a new venture, create more free time for myself, and engage in more of my passion of travel.

And I made a promise to myself to at least try, and only then would I have no regrets.

So, in your quest for entrepreneurship, remember 3 things:

1. You’ll never be ready, so start anyway
2. You’ll have to work hard, sometimes more than your “day job”
3. You’ll have no regrets at finally getting the courage to move forward
