So we all have them…
‘Silly’ ideas, right?
Ideas that you hope would change the world, or on a simpler scale, just change your life. It’s probably a desire to wake up and do what you love every day, and it’s what you dream about and what you long to have. But, for some reason you’ve convinced yourself that those ‘silly’ ideas are just that— silly.
So Let Me Introduce You to My Silly…
Now, I love to travel! And in August 2013, on a 6-country tour in Eastern Europe, I had a silly idea.
Somewhere between Poland and Turkey, I started to have these grandiose plans thinking, “Hey, I could totally do this… I can take people to different countries, show them around, and explore different areas of the world. After all, I love to travel, and it can’t be that hard, right?”
Right?
So, my silly idea became an overwhelming obsession to find a way to make that happen… to just take a group of people on a tour, somewhere, somehow, sometime…
And within 4 months, I had launched a website, made my first tour offering, and booked 3 lucky travelers! (We toured Istanbul, Turkey for 7 days!)
It was a ton of work! And after doing a few tours, I discovered that I actually loved planning trips… just my own.
And now you… What’s Your Silly?
Have you ever enjoyed doing something so much that you thought to yourself:
Hey, if I could get paid to do this, I would do it for the rest of my life?
I would be to guess that if you’re reading this, the thought has probably crossed your mind a time or two.
So…
You may have this AWESOME idea, but next thing you know, you’re talking yourself out of it. You start to think:
This will not work! There are tons of people who do this. And do it well. With more knowledge. With more experience. With less fear. I. just. can’t.
I was there, and I had those same fears. Silly showed up so much I actually thought she was a real person. And, sometimes we even had real conversations!
The night before my Istanbul tour started (which was amazing by the way), I remember feeling so sick to my stomach, so nervous, and so terrified. I thought the entire trip would be a flop. I mean…
Who was I anyway? What made me think that I could do this? I can’t do this!
I doubted myself. I doubted the idea. I doubted my experience.
And, so will you.
You’ll also have those days of anxiety, fear, your heart racing, sweaty palms, and yes, Silly. Silly will be right next to you.
But guess what? You CAN tell Silly ‘No’
Take Silly aside, tell her to move on with those silly, silly shenanigans. And, turn that idea into something real. Because if you don’t do it, Silly will always keep you company.
Your Silly will always hold you back.
So how do you do it? How do you keep Silly at bay and tell Silly, ‘No’?
Here are three surefire ways:
1. Think, ‘It’s doable!’
If others are doing what you’ve only dreamed of doing, that’s a good thing! That means it’s absolutely possible and there are people to serve. You just need the tools and the skillset to help you get started and finally place Silly in her place. So move past your Silly. Kick her out if you have to. She may come back, but it’s important to remember that Silly is just that—silly. (Full disclosure: Silly still shows up on my doorstep occasionally and even shoves herself past me and plops right down on the couch! I just find a way to acknowledge and ignore.)
2. Get started!
Make a plan to launch that idea. Set the goal, break it down into bite-sized pieces, and start today!
3. Hold yourself accountable!
Tell the world (family, friends, and potential customers) about your plan to make that idea happen. It can be such a scary thought, but once you do it, you’ll find that you’re not only accountable to yourself, but you’ve made yourself accountable to other people. It’ll be harder to back down from that idea that you desire once you’ve let others in on your goal. And, you may even have others interested in your progress, so that will often get you in gear.
Still think that idea is silly? I didn’t think so.
Now, leave a comment below: What’s the one “silly” thing that’s holding you back?
