How the 6 Rights of Medication Administration Can Help You in Business

As nurses, we’re all aware of the 6 Rights of Medication Administration (I think we’re now up to 8?). And, as a comparison in structure, I’ve coined what I’ll call the 6 Rights of Nursing Entrepreneurship.

These Rights helped me form a foundation in business all while understanding that business building and achievement is a fluid process that falls along a continuum of challenges, doubts, frustrations, loses, exhaustion, hopes, elation, and wins. And these 6 Rights are takeaways of my business startup and growth process that may help ensure success in your entrepreneurial venture as well.

Key to creating a profitable business is having a system that allows you to continuously gauge whether your business is moving in the right direction.

In periods of doubt and frustration, I check to make sure the following 6 Rights are still in place. If you’ve found your business to be momentarily deficient, take a break, examine what’s lacking of the 6 Rights, and then rebuild that foundation first.

Right # 1 – The Right Mindset

Now, this is probably the most challenging of all the Rights.

But, starting out and succeeding in business flows from Mindset. And negative mindsets can keep us stagnant and just wishing instead of doing for a long time.

And, negative mindsets may manifest as the following thoughts:

  • I don’t have enough experience
  • There are other people who can do this better than I can
  • I don’t have enough money or time to start a business
  • I don’t know HOW to start a business
  • I don’t even know how to manage a business
  • I never got a business degree

No worries! All of these thoughts are completely normal. And it’s okay to have them, as long as you make the commitment to not let those thoughts paralyze you into inaction.

Right #2 – The Right Idea

So once you’ve settled on the right mindset, the second most challenging Right could be just having the right idea(s).

And when gauging your ideas, you’ll want to be realistic, have an idea that rings true to you, and if you’re just starting out, preferably an idea that won’t have a huge startup cost.

You’ll also want to consider your skills, strengths, and interests as well as your customers’ ability and willingness to pay for your products or services.

Now as nurses, we have many, many ideas and opportunities available to us that can prove successful in business. Some of you may choose to find a ready-made solution, and some of you may choose to create a product or service all on your own. Either way, make sure you love what you do!

Right #3 – The Right Clients or Customers

So not only does starting a business take the right mindset and the right idea, moving to the next step requires you to really, really evaluate who your ideal clients or customers will be.

And one important note before discovering your ideal clientele is something I’ve learned over and over in my research when I started my business:

When you try to sell to everyone, you’ll eventually sell to no one.

So it’s important to be really clear on who they are. And, you’ll want to know things like:

  • Where they work
  • Where they live
  • What’s their income
  • Their marital status
  • How many children they have
  • What are their hobbies
  • What are their fears, challenges, and concerns

This list can go on and on…

Also, getting really, really specific and really, really clear on who you’re selling to will save you tons of money when it’s time to market.

And when you know these things about your clientele, they’ll be excited to work with you or buy from you because you truly know who they are and what they need.

Right #4 – The Right Product or Service

This Right involves figuring out exactly what your products or services will be. So, when you’re creating or selecting it, you’ll want to make sure it showcases your talents as well as be something you truly enjoy doing. Because if we’re doing something we don’t enjoy, we tend to resent doing it at all, right?

So if you enjoy it, you’ll most likely stick with it. Then, you can eventually make money in the process.

Right #5 – The Right Implementation

When launching your business, you have to have a plan that sets you and your clientele up for success. So, you’ll need to have the right systems in place and right tools at your disposal to help your business run smoothly. Once you do, your clientele will be able to accomplish the goals that they’ve set out for themselves.

So the right implementation is putting together all of your products and services and offering them to your clientele at the right price point and then simply opening your doors of your business or launching it to the world.

And so often, I read how many entrepreneurs (even successful ones) had a hard time putting up the grand opening sign. They were often afraid that their product wasn’t quite right, their website wasn’t perfect or any of the other mindsets we express as entrepreneurs… and I was there, too.

But the key is to just start. My mantra being:

[Tweet “You have to start before you’re ready!”]

And getting help to do the things that are necessary for your business but are not your strengths prove invaluable. So unless, you have all the time in the world, it’s best to delegate some of your tasks so you can put your best skills and most of your time into creating and launching products or services that your customers will love!

Right #6 – The Right Support

So, think about it. How many times have you been really excited about something… and you decided to tell people about it only to realize they’re not as enthusiastic or supportive as you thought they were going to be.

It’s a disappointing and lonely feeling, right? And if we’re really, really honest, sometimes it can hurt!

The harsh reality is that unless you’re making lots of money upfront and have all the outward appearance of success… no matter if you’re a month out in your business or years… people may not support or even respect what you’re doing.

To them, it really won’t matter the business you start or the potential it has or how exciting it is for you. If they don’t see the success behind it, they could possibly minimize it. Meaning, it’s not real for them. And, unfortunately, it’s not even a business for them as well.

So it’s going to be important for you find the right support system while building your business. You must work alongside other entrepreneurs or like-minded individuals who can provide you with the support and the encouragement you need to get your business off the ground and keep it growing.

So what do you think? Do you have the 6 Rights of Nursing Entrepreneurship in place for your business? Are you lacking in one particular Right and need to refocus? Feel free to share this post and comment below.

  1. Awesome list and great metaphor for us nurses. You know I love your mantra “You have to start before you are ready” and have quoted you in several conversations! I can relate to all of those negative mindsets in the first right and as I read them asked myself how I could shift, cope, or navigate them. For instance, “I don’t have enough experience” could lead to, “Where can I get some more experience?” or “There are other people who do this better than me” could become “What and how can I learn from others who are doing this kind of work?”

It was a great exercise for me! j

    Thanks, Marsha Ann.

    1. Thanks for reading Beth! Negative mindsets also had me paralyzed for the longest time, and it’s great to do the shifts from “can’t” to “how could I…”
